‘त’ & Valmiki Ramayanam

The letter ‘’ has a very important place in Valmiki Ramayanam.

कारम् –the 16th aksharam in the vyanjana sankhya indicate the Purusha.

In the Taitiriya Brahmana (Shaaka) and also in Chandogya it is mentioned that Purusha is the One with 16 Kalas –

Kala is the fraction – 1/16 (வீசம்), so 16 Kalas denote the Poornathvam.

Hence, ‘त’ represent this Poornathvam.

Sage Pippalada in Prashna Upanishad (6th question) explains about this Purusha as the One residing inside our body, beyond the conditioned mind, waiting to be activated.

In Narayaneeyam, Purusha is mentioned as the Virat Swarupam dwelling inside jivas.

Valmiki wanted to hear these 16 gunas of Ramar from Naradar in the Sankshepa Ramayanam of Balakandam sargam 1.1.  Naradar also explains the qualities of the Purusha to Valmiki in his answer.

In Srimad Bhagavatam, Lord Brahma in the beginning heard the ashareeri vaak as

स्पर्शेषु यत् षोडशं-एकविंशं – SB.2.9.6 which indicated that he should do the तप (tapas).

कारम् – कार्य साधक: = ’ also represents all forms of Karya Sidhi.

It is said that Maharishi Valmiki has done most of the shlokas of important incidents starting with this aksharam in Ramayanam.  Some of them are

  • The very first shloka –
  • When Narayana agrees to take the avataram –
  • Yagya Purushan emerging with Payasam –
  • Sri Rama Jananam –
  • Sita Kalyanam –
  • Sita embracing Ramar after he eliminated the 14k+ raakshas single-handedly in just 72 minutes, also the prelude to SundaraKandam (like Lakshmana here, it is Hanuman in Sundrakandam, she waits for Ramar) – तम् दृष्ट्वा शत्रु हंतारम् …
  • Shabari sees Rama/Lakshmanaal –
  • Hanuman first speaking to Ramar –
  • First shloka of Sundarakandam –
  • When Anjeyar sees Sita Devi for the first time – ततो मलिन सम्वीताम्…
  • Shuba Sagunangal for Sita Devi –
  • Last shloka of Sundarakandam –
  • Sundarakandam in Champu Ramayanam by Bhoja-Kalidasa also starts with – ततो हनुमान् दशकण्ठनीताम्…
  • Agastyar’s Adhitya Hrdayam –
  • Ramar Pattabhishekam –

Some more shlokas beginning with ‘’ –

  • Rama entering Ahalya’s hermitage,
  • Rama meeting Guhan,
  • Bharatan blessed with the Paadhukas, Sharabanga moksham
  • Rama seeing Agastya in his Kutil, Shabari moksham,
  • Sugriva’s coronation, when Hanuman decides to cross the Ocean,
  • Vibhishana’s coronation, Garudan arriving at the Nagastram,
  • Hanuman decides to carry the whole of Sanjeevani mountain,
  • Rama decided to finish Ravana on hearing from Matali,
  • Hanuman meeting Bharata to inform the news of arrival of Ramar,
  • Bharata receiving Ramar at Ayodhya after 14 years

& many more …

Also, SundaraKandam is the ONLY Kandam in Ramayanam that is samputi-ed with

i.e. starts and ends with along with many in the middle, at important landmarks etc.

  • Ramayanam represent the poornathvam in the life of a Jivan and
  • SundaraKandam is the poornathvam for Ramayanam and
  • Hanuman is the poornathvam of SundaraKandam.

Hence Sundarakandam is said to be full of Poorna Karya Sidhi:

  • Karya Sidhi for Hanuman as he got to meet Sita Devi successfully.
  • Karya Sidhi for Sita as she was waiting to hear about Rama, she got the news.
  • Karya Sidhi for Ramar as he got to know about the whereabouts of Sita.

Karya Sidhi for all readers, the only karyam being – reach Bhagavan to be कृत-कृत्य |
